The Apartment
Association of Tarrant County represents the
legislative and regulatory interests of the
multihousing industry at the local, state, county
and national levels of government. We work to
implement, oppose, amend or mediate government
initiatives that affect the quality of the
rental-housing product that our members work so
hard to develop and maintain.

Bill to increase jurisdiction of JPs
SB 618 – Texas Governor Perry has signed
legislation (SB 618) on June 15 that increases the
jurisdiction in Justice of the Peace courts from
$5,000 to $10,000. This law also includes language
that corporations do not have to be represented by
an attorney in JP courts. TAA general counsel
Wendy Wilson is reviewing this provision for
potential impact on the multifamily housing
industry. It appears that this change allows
onsite staffs to represent corporate owners (not
partnerships nor individuals) in eviction suits
for any/all causes. Currently, non-owner,
non-attorney onsite staffs can represent owners in
Justice of the Peace court only for cases
involving non-payment of rent and/or holding over
beyond the lease term.

ABOUT AATC's LEGISLATIVE DEPARTMENT
The Apartment
Association of Tarrant County is one of 150
affiliated state and local multihousing
association across the nation that work together
to implement favorable legislation in Washington
D.C. We are active participants in the
National Apartment Association and
National Multihousing Council’s legislative
alliance. Each year in March, AATC sends a
delegation to our nation’s capitol to meet with
our elected representatives, representing the best
interests of our members.
The Apartment Association’s Government
Affairs Committee works hard to provide each AATC
member with the public policy information they
need to make sound business decisions. Our program helps us build important relationships
with elected leaders, fostering initiatives that
strengthen the multihousing product. And, we work
closely with our friends at the
Texas Apartment
Association, the
National Apartment Association
and the
National Multihousing Council to ensure
sound public advocacy initiatives.
