State Issues
The Texas Apartment Association represents the views of more than 10,500 rental housing owners, builders, developers and managers at the state capitol in Austin and before 18 state regulatory agencies. TAA members own/manage more than 2 million units throughout Texas. TAA advocates legislation designed to address the pressing problems and concerns of rental housing owners and professionals. TAA has been a key proponent of legislation to increase security measures for residents of rental housing. We've supported legislation that has set the standard for security devices required in residential rental housing, as well as fencing requirements for pool yards. TAA has also been instrumental in supporting the passage of meaningful tort reform in the state of Texas. Through grassroots activities and one of the largest trade association Political Action Committees in the state, TAA supports candidates for the Texas Legislature and state-wide office who will be receptive to industry positions. TAA members play a crucial role in our success. Personal contact between our members and legislators who pass laws is the most important tool TAA has to bring about positive change for the rental housing industry. 2011 Texas Legislature Session – The 180 day Texas Legislature is in full swing. Committee hearings and floor votes on legislation that impacts the rental housing industry are daily occurring. In addition to tax and landlord-tenant issues, TAA’s lobby team continues to pursue passage of affirmative legislation to modify state fire codes and pauper affidavit statutes. More than 6,000 bills have been introduced, TAA is actively tracking more than 600 pieces of legislation that directly impact the multifamily housing industry.
